David Karla and Deni Omeragić are the musical odd couple that just seems to work. They met in Budapest, where by a brief cosmic coincidence they found themselves at the same time, and though Deni was long gone by the time of this session the seeds had been sown. Seemingly basic, the weave David Karla’s stripped down bass clarinet playing over Omeragić’s textural piano (both standard and prepared) in only his second release on the instrument, presents a profound and reflective picture. Not for the faint-hearted.

“I think the idea behind this session had been in both our minds for a while, but as it turned out the decision was sudden, spontaneous, and at the first hint of Spring at the start of 2026. It was also incredibly rushed, slotted between other rehearsals and recording projects: in the end we had just enough time for two long takes. These 4 tracks are the totality of the session, but in both takes, we reached satisfying conclusions, and then the music drove us forward with fresh ideas which were worth framing separately. I also have the good fortune of having two pianos: a playable pianola that works as advertised, and the original house grand piano, which is an untunable nightmare of dead and dying keys and ancient strings, attached to a still-sweet soundboard, and these days further mutated with various preparations: bolts, springs, rubbers, and kitchen implements.

For me, the session was shadowed by a rare encounter I had in the morning cycling along the Danube. On a patch of unscathed riparian forest, 50 metres from drab concrete suburbia, a wild pig grazing, living his best wild-pig life in the middle of Budapest. He isn’t the refugee from the sausage factory: we are.
Musically, the sausage factory is the often self-imposed need to package our music into clear, consumable stylistic boxes. We are moving deeper into a world that is post genre (perhaps post-post-genre), and I think we have managed to escape easy categorization on this session. This music exists in a space between free jazz and improvised chamber music, where the cross-blown bass clarinet hints at a balkan harmonic flute, and the prepared piano takes us to an industrial space, with dark metal treatments on the bass, and melodies float gently through ethereal reverbs.
